We believe speech therapy should be fun! Long-lasting learning happens when the child is motivated, engaged and regulated. We utilize play-based animal-assisted therapy to increase opportunities for naturalistic communication.
Jennifer graduated from the University of Redlands in 2011 with a Masters Degree in Speech-Language Pathology. She holds her Certificate of Clinical Competency in Speech-Language Pathology from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Frances is a professionally trained Facility Dog from Canine Companions. She was trained for two years and knows over 40 commands. Frances is extremely sweet, friendly and loves to work with kids! On a typical day she can be seen playing "Jenga," "Honeybee Tree," "Go Fish," retrieving items and opening doors for her clients.

Reseach has shown animal-assisted therapy can have both mental health and physical health benefits. The dog is an excellent motivator, as the client is encouraged to use their language or speech sound in order to get the dog to perform a trick. This makes the session much more natural and functional, which in turn helps with initial buy-in. The dog is also used for sensory input, assisting with transitions, and most importantly as a non-judgmental communication partner.
We only accept private pay at this time. Sessions will be billed weekly and may be paid via credit card, cash or check. A superbill may be provided upon request, as some PPO insurances may reimburse for out of network speech services; however, reimbursement is not guaranteed and it is your responsibility to submit the superbill and follow-up with your insurance provider.
The dog does not need to be present for all sessions. If the child is allergic, we can simply treat in a separate room or telehealth may be a preferred option. In cases of fear, Frances can stay in her bed/crate and slowly be exposed to the child. In my experience over the years, children often quickly get over their fear once they realize how friendly Frances is and how many cool tricks she can do.
